Fixed-layout eBook File Formats

We produce a range of fixed-layout eBook file formats including KF8 for Amazon Kindle, ePUB 3 for Apple and PagePerfect for Barnes & Noble. The formats that are suitable for your project will depend upon the content of your manuscript and your plans for distributing the converted eBook files.

Amazon Kindle fixed-layout eBook formats

KF8

Fixed-layout KF8 files work across all Amazon Kindle devices, tablets and reading apps. This is the most common fixed-layout format for Kindle and is generally used where the layout of a book includes high-graphic content and content that does not contain small detail. Recipe books, children’s picture books and photography titles are often produced using the fixed-layout KF8 format.

Features of fixed-layout KF8 files:

  • Can include pop-up text panels but do not support pinch-and-zoom navigation.
  • KF8 files that are to be uploaded through Amazon’s KDP program can not include embedded audio or video.
  • Text content in KF8 files must be at least 4mm high when viewed on a Kindle Fire HD device. If the body text is smaller than 4mm you can use pop-up text panels to display the text at a larger (4mm+) size but this is not suitable for books that include lots of text. If the text is not 4mm high Amazon may unpublish the files.

KF8 files have a .mobi file extension.

Kindle Textbook Creator

The fixed-layout format produced by Kindle Textbook Creator (KTC) is called print replica and has a .kpf file extension.

Print replica files are suitable for producing detailed textbooks, reports and complex layout files that are not appropriate for conversion to KF8.

Files produced through KTC can be uploaded via Amazon’s KDP service and will work on Kindle Fire tablets and Kindle reading apps for iPad, iPhone, Android phones, Android tablets, PC and Mac. Interactive features like audio, video, and image pop-ups are currently only available on 3rd generation or newer Fire tablets. Books created with Kindle Textbook Creator are not made available on Kindle eInk readers.

Features of Kindle Textbook Creator files:

  • Unlike KF8 files, KTC eBooks do support pinch-and-zoom and do not have the 4mm minimum text restrictions that can be a barrier to producing KF8 files for some content.
  • KTC eBooks do support embedded audio and video and are the only Kindle file type that offer this feature.

Kindle Comic Creator

Kindle Comic Creator (KCC) is specifically for creating graphic novels, comics and manga. Using KCC we can produce fixed-layout files that utilize Kindle Panel View. This allows the reader to be guided through each panel of content in the correct order.

Files produced using KCC will work on Kindle Fire HD, Kindle Fire HD 8.9”, Kindle Fire, Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle for iPad, Kindle for iPhone and Kindle Android apps.

Features of Kindle Comic Creator files:

  • Kindle Panel View magnification is used – there is no support for pinch-and-zoom.
  • As KCC produces KF8 files there is no support for embedding audio or video.
  • KCC does support right-to-left page turns.

KCC produces KF8 files with a .mobi extension.

Barnes & Noble NOOK fixed-layout eBook formats

PagePerfect

The PagePerfect format can only be sold through Barnes & Noble’s NOOK Books online stores. PagePerfect is compatible with B&N’s NOOK Tablet, HD and HD+ Tablets, NOOK Color, NOOK by Samsung 4 NOOK 7.0, and NOOK by Samsung [Tab 4 10.1, S2 & E]. The PagePerfect format can also be read using some of Nook’s free reading apps (NOOK for Windows 8 Tablet, NOOK for iOS, NOOK for Android), though there are geographic restrictions on where those NOOK reading apps are available for download.

PagePerfect is based on the PDF format and can be read in single or double-page views. Dependent on the device, the reader can use touch zoom to enlarge parts of the page. PagePerfect is usually used for non-fiction titles and production of fixed-layout titles which are not children’s picture books – these are usually produced using the NOOK Kids format (see below).

Features of PagePerfect files:

  • Support for pinch-and-zoom page navigation.
  • Pages can be portrait or landscape.
  • Searchable text.
  • No support for audio or video.

The NOOK Kids format can only be displayed in landscape so your content will either need to be single landscape pages (which will be displayed one at a time) or two-page spreads.

NOOK Kids files are similar to ePUB 3 files but will only work with specific B&N devices/apps . Dependent on the device, the reader can use touch zoom to enlarge parts of the page, activate pop-up text and also play a “Read to Me” narration of the story if this has been embedded within the file.

NOOK Comics are based on PDF files that utilize the Article tool to create panels – similar to Amazon’s Kindle Comic Creator.

ePUB 3 fixed-layout file format

Fixed-layout ePUB 3 files are the most widely supported fixed-layout file type. An increasing number of platforms and devices have adopted ePUB 3 as their preferred fixed-layout eBook format, and this type of file can be sold through channels such as Apple’s iBooks app and iTunes, Google Play, eSentral, Kobo, StoryTel, Overdrive and their partner retailers.

Please note that fixed-layout ePUB 3 files are not currently supported on Amazon Kindle devices or B&N’s NOOK and cannot be sold through Amazon or B&N.

Most compatible ePUB 3 devices, such as iPad, iPhone, Google Nexus and Kobo Arc, allow the reader to switch between viewing the eBook as single pages or as two-page spreads. Most devices will also feature an animated page turn option.

Unlike standard eBook formats, which allow the reader to change settings such as text size, font and line spacing, with fixed-layout files the page elements are fixed, although with ePUB 3 files most devices will give the reader the ability to zoom in and enlarge specific areas of the page.
