There are two main types of eBook – standard/reflowable formats and fixed-layout formats. As part of our initial quotation process, we would advise which formats are best suited to your content.

Most eBooks are reflowable, with text content that will reflow to fit the display properties and settings of the reader’s device/app. Content that is predominantly text is usually suited to conversion to reflowable eBook formats. This includes novels and narrative non-fiction such as memoirs and biographies.

Reflowable formats have slightly more distribution opportunities and device/app compatibility. The biggest perceived disadvantage of reflowable eBook formats is the low level of control that there is over the layout of the book (page breaks, font choice, text size, etc.).

Fixed-layout eBook formats are used for more complex content such as textbooks, reports, and children’s picture books. The page layout of fixed-layout eBooks is fixed (similar to a PDF file), and looks virtually identical across all supporting device/app combinations.

The big advantage of fixed-layout eBooks is the level of control that there is over the layout of each page, which is why these formats are used for content with multiple columns, lots of images, double-page spreads, and full-bleed images.

Most major eBook sales channels now support fixed-layout eBook formats. Amazon and Barnes & Noble have their own fixed-layout formats, whilst most other sales channels support fixed-layout ePUB files.

Please send details of your project to helpdesk@ebookpartnership.com and we can advise you on whether reflowable or fixed-layout formats are the best option for you.

No, we do not embed DRM protection into the eBook files we produce.
